Bagno Vignoni is a tiny ancient medieval hamlet, a few kilometers from San Quirico in the heart of Val d’Orcia, takes it’s fame from the thermal spring that gushes into the main square of the village. The hamlet is made up around the central heart of the big thermal basin, in which it collects water from the spring that rises from 1000 meters underground at the temperature of 52°C, and with its dimensions, 49 meters long and 29 meters wide, creates a singular spectacle that makes this locality unique. The ancient history of the Bagno Vignoni Spa is made evident by its renowned guests of the past, from Lorenzo “Il Magnifico” (Laurence “The Magnificent”) to Caterina da Siena (Catherine from Siena), including poets and writers.
Today Bagno Vignoni is a freeze-frame of a medieval hamlet from the XIV Century. It’s walls are from the 14th Century, while the buildings around the main square / basin are from the 15th Century, constructed by Bernardo Rossellino, in honour of Pope Pio II.
The thriving nature and thick network of paths that mark this corner of uncontaminated Tuscany, makes this an unforgettable destination for trekkers and cyclists. Of particular beauty are the panoramic paths through the river Orcia gorge.
